Who We Are
We are a community of readers determined to improve oral language and beginning literacy skills in Fairfax County.
What We Do
Develop a relationship with a student through reading and conversation.
Volunteers read virtually and in person in a 1-on-1 setting to elementary-age students once a week. The bond between volunteer and student builds with each reading session; it’s important for our students to know that they are supported and they have at least one adult in their life that they can trust.
Assist in student literacy development.
Many students may live in homes with limited exposure to books and/or hearing books read to them. When we read to these students, it can positively impact their literacy development. Not only that, our program donates 3 books each month to each child we read to!
Promote the enjoyment of stories and reading for elementary-age students
Reading with young students increases their interest in books and their motivation to read. Research indicates that increased interest and motivation positively impacts students’ reading achievement. By the end of a school year, some children even feel inspired and empowered enough to read along with or to the volunteers!

“Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”
